Lessons, Camps, & Foundation Training

Horsemanship

There's more to horses than just riding.  Good horsemanship is an ability to be what your horse needs at any given moment, both on the ground and on their back.  It is a chance to partner with an amazing creature.  Instruction is given in a multitude of areas, including but not limited to: care of the horse, ground work and riding.

Lessons

Lessons are available at Abbey Creek Stables in Portland, Oregon and at the Course-Walkers farm in Clatskanie*, Oregon.  Beginners to Advanced, ages 8** and up are welcome.    Lessons last one hour and are a combination of grooming, tacking, ground work, warm-up, riding, cool down and "clean up" (putting away the horse and equipment properly).  As students improve, they are given more responsibility to perform tasks outside of their lesson time, such as grooming, warm-up. cool-down and clean-up.  Beginners are taught to ride bareback to help develop balance.  More advanced students enjoy fun activities such as summer camps, trail rides, jumping instruction and outside clinics and field trips.  Course-Walkers provides a safe and fun environment that emphasises personal responsibility, decision making and accountability.  It is not a high-pressure show barn, though we do not bar our students from showing if they would like to.  We are in it to win our horses respect, not ribbons.

*Lessons at our Clatskanie farm will be available starting September, 2009.

**Children 8-10 are taught at our Clatskanie farm only.  If your child is under the age of 8 we can refer you to a lesson program that specializes in young children at Abbey Creek Stables.
